WHAT IS THE WEDDING GARMENT?

A : Hello, friend. I've been reading this passage about the parable of the wedding garment, and I'm honestly confused. Why does it matter so much what you wear to a feast? It seems like such a small thing. 

B : Actually, the garment isn't really about clothing. It's a symbol. The wedding garment represents Christ's righteousness. Basically, the perfect character that only Jesus can give us. 

A : Oh, I see. So, we can't just create our own righteousness? Like through good works or trying to be a good person? >> 

B : Exactly. That's actually one of the biggest points in this passage. The text calls it trying to cover yourself with fig leaves. Human-made attempts to hide our sin. [1:00] It's basically saying that no matter how hard we try on our own, we can't measure up. 

A : That sounds kind of hopeless, doesn't it? 

B : It would be, except for the solution. Christ lived a perfect life and obeyed God's law completely. Through faith in him, we can be clothed with his righteousness. It's a gift. We don't earn it. >> 

A : But wait, if it's just a gift and we don't earn it, does that mean we can just believe in Jesus and then do we want?

B : No, that's where a lot of people get it wrong. The passage is pretty clear. Righteousness is right doing, and it is by their deeds that all will be judged. Real faith has to show up in how you actually live. 

A : So, faith without works is dead. >> 

B : Basically, yes. The passage criticizes nominal Christians. People who claim to believe, but refuse to actually change. They come [2:00] to the feast, but they haven't put on the wedding garment. 

A : What does that look like in real life? What's the difference between genuine faith and fake faith? 

B : Genuine faith means you're actually trying to follow God's commandments. You're letting Christ transform you from the inside. 

Fake faith is just going through the motions. Maybe you go to church and call yourself Christian, but your heart and your actions don't reflect it. >> 

A : And God cares about the heart, not just outward appearances. >> 

B : Right. The passage says God's law looks into the secrets of the heart. Every act is judged by the motives that prompt it. >> 

A : So, someone could look righteous on the outside, but still be rejected? 

B : Yes. And here's something that really stood out to me. There's this idea about God's law. Some people claim that when Christ died, the law was done away with. 

But the passage says, [3:00] "No." Christ didn't destroy the law, he upheld it. He died because the law is real, and breaking it has consequences. >> 

A : So, the law is still binding? >> 

B : It's presented as the standard. God expects his children to live according to it. 

The only way that's possible is through Christ's power working in us. We can't do it alone. 

A : This is all pretty urgent sounding. The passage keeps mentioning judgment and the end times. Why the rush? >> 

B : Because this is our only chance. There's no second probation after this life. 

It's now that we need to put on that wedding garment. Now that we need to accept Christ's righteousness and let it change how we live. 

A : That's sobering. So, what should someone actually do about this? How do you put on the wedding garment? 

B : The passage suggests you surrender to Christ. [4:00] You stop trusting in your own goodness and accept his. You let his character become your character through faith. And then you demonstrate that transformation through obedience, keeping his commandments, doing righteous deeds. >> 

A : And if someone doesn't, what happens at the judgment? 

B : In the parable, the man without the wedding garment is speechless when the king asks how he got in without it. The passage says something similar will happen at the final judgment. Everyone will stand before God. Their lives will be revealed, and there will be no excuses. >> 

A : So, it's love plus accountability? 

B : Exactly. God gives us everything we need, the example of Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit, forgiveness, the promise of eternal life. But we have to actually accept it and live it out.  

A : This really changes how I think about just being a Christian. [5:00] It sounds like it's a lot more serious than I realized. >>

B : It is. But the passage also emphasizes that we have incredible privileges and light available to us. We know Christ came, died, rose again. 

We have the full Bible. The invitation is freely offered to everyone. The burden is really on us now to respond. >> 

A : When you put it that way, it's both inspiring and kind of terrifying. 

B : Yeah. I think that's the whole point. The wedding feast is ready. The garment is provided. The invitation is given. But we have to actually put it on.
